ABOUT

Alicia is a potter and elementary school teacher based in Roxbury, MA. She makes small-batch pottery in her Roxbury studio and fires her work in both wood and electric kilns.

My aspiration is to make pots that simultaneously look modern and ancient. I’m inspired by ancient functional Japanese and Korean pottery, particularly Korean rice bowls and Japanese zen teaware. While I borrow liberally from these traditions, I always put my own spin on it – whether it be a wire handle on a cookie jar or a pulled handle on a carved kurinuki cup. I use a subdued, neutral palette inspired by nature, frequently with contrasting tones between the clay, slip, and glaze.

Functionality always comes first for me, and I want my pots to be used often and to feel good in one’s hands while they are being used. I hope that the user will have the urge to turn it around to see what’s on the other side – and whether my pots are wood fired or electric fired in my Roxbury apartment, they rarely have homogeneous surfaces.
